Homework

Ottoson Middle School

Homework is Important

Completing homework assignments is very important. Plan your time, make preparations, and develop habits, which will help you to produce your best work. The amount of homework varies from one to two hours per evening. Reading for pleasure is always encouraged.

When doing homework, good study habits are essential.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Record your assignments in agenda book and understand your assignment before you leave class.
  • Make a suitable study area.
  • Obtain necessary materials.
  • Establish a regular time for studying.
  • Prepare your lessons thoroughly every day and avoid cramming for tests. Don’t leave long-range assignments until the day before they are due.
  • Read for meaning and take notes.
  • Keep a reasonable bedtime hour.
  • If a teacher provides a rubric for your assignment, use it as a guide for achievement.

Homework Hotline

As an added convenience for students who were absent or who might have forgotten the assignments, the school provides a Homework Hotline - an automated voice-mail system where teachers record daily assignments.

Almost all teachers participate.  Whenever new assignments are given to students, the teachers go into the trouble of recording a message describing the assignments on the Homework Hotline.  So there can be no excuses that "I was not there", or "I forgot".  This is a valuable resource, so please use it.

To access the Homework Hotline, dial 781-316-3745 and follow the instructions.

(A typical message contains the date of the message, a description of the assignment, the due date, the name of the teacher, the cluster, and the color of the cluster section.  It may also include a reminder about long-term projects and their due dates.)

Homework On-Line

A few teachers may post their reading lists, grading rubrics, long-term projects, or even daily homework assignments on the Internet.

Currently there is no on-going program to facilitate posting on the Internet of this type of information by the teachers.
