OPAC News

OPAC News OPAC (Ottoson Parent Advisory Committee) was successful in supporting the academic enrichment of Arlington's middle school students through its work in activities including the Teacher's Wish List, Conference Scheduling, Activity Day, Teacher Appreciation, and more. Thanks to everyone who volunteered this year in any capacity -- your involvement makes all the difference!

Currently, OPAC is preparing to coordinate the 8th Grade Recognition Ceremony and dance (for students only) that follows, which takes place on Monday evening, June 27 at 6:30 p.m in the large gym. 8th Grade Parents (and anyone else who would like to participate) are asked to contribute whatever amount they can to support this event.

In addition, there are several committee chair positions available; chairpeople may recruit as many volunteers as they wish to work with them. Areas include: ·

  • Decorating (red, white & blue theme in gym; mardi gras theme in café)
  • Beverages (two or three people co-chairs needed) ·
  • Desserts/Fruit/Cheese ·
  • Certificate Coordinator (work at Ottoson for 4 hours approximately a week before the ceremony) ·
  • Balloons for gym and café; about 14 dozen balloons are needed.

Donations to the Annual Fund were disappointing this year. In fact, income was $4,000 under budget, and we were forced to cut donations to the Wish List as well as other programs that we have been able to support in the past. June 28

Tuesday, June 28 is the last day of this school year. Following Ottoson tradition, all students are invited to recognize their accomplishments with an end-of-the-year field trip on this day. Students from all classes (grades 6, 7, and 8) will visit Canobie Lake Park in Salem, New Hampshire. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate as a school. Details will be coming home in June.

Blue Cross After School Activities

The Following activities are being offered as part of the 5-2-1- blue cross/blue shield grant. This is not part of the am/pm program and all students are welcome to participate.

MCAS Schedule

Breakfast (granola bar and juice) will be available for all students
during the MCAS testing period. Breakfast is available from 7-7:55.

This is the schedule for MCAS for week of May 16:

6th grade
Monday (Math), Tuesday (Math) - No calculators allowed.

7th grade
Monday (English), Tuesday (English), Wednesday (English), Thursday (History/Math) - Please remind students to bring calculators to school on Thursday.

8th grade

Book Group postponed until after vacation

The Parents/ Students Book Discussion Group will not meet on April 12, 2005. Conflicts with music and other activities in this busy spring season have arisen and this meeting will be rescheduled after April vacation.

Spring Openhouse

The Spring Openhouse will be held on April 14, 2005, 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. For Parents/Guarians of current Sixth Grade Students. (incoming Fifth Grade students/parents are also invited. 7th and 8th Grade are not expected to attend.)

We’re looking for articles about activity day events or anything else going on at the Ottoson, black and white drawings, cartoons, poems, book reviews, survey’s, interviews of teachers or students, opinion essays and much more. Deadline is April 15th. See Mrs. Cummings in room 218 – just off the lobby for more information or help with writing an article.

OPAC (Ottoson Parent Advisory Committee) urgently needs the help of all Ottoson families. The OPAC budget is running more than $4,000 UNDER BUDGET this year due to lack of membership donations, and we need your participation in order to continue OPAC support of Ottoson's programs and services. If you haven't yet made your contribution, or if you would like to supplement your contribution, please consider donating whatever amount you can as soon as possible (suggested dues are $20 per family for the year -- that's 200 families we need to help).

Ottoson Exploration Evening Thursday, March 31, 2005 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Exploration Night 2005 will take place at the Ottoson Middle School on Thursday, March 31, 2005 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

This school event is an opportunity for next September’s 6th grade students and their parents to visit and learn all about the additional programs offered at the Middle School level. In addition to the strong Academic program offered to students at the Ottoson, many special subjects taught by a talented faculty are designed to broaden the young adolescent’s worldview, tap vocational interests and develop life skills. Students and parents of current 6th, 7th and 8th graders are also welcome to attend and to more fully understand the rationale for the classes taken during this school year in Fine Arts, Foods and Nutrition, Sewing and Child Care, Music, Theater, Arts, Health Studies, Physical Education, Computer, Construction and Communication Technology and the Library/Media Center.

The Exploration Night, unlike the Fall Back-to School night, is less formally structured. From 7:00-9:00 p.m., pairs of students and parents may travel around the Ottoson’s special subject classrooms and observe current students baking up a batch of cookies, demonstrating Project Gadget, taking a Power Point lesson, searching for facts on the Internet, trying out a Web quest, videotaping a skit, building a bridge and much more. Teachers and administrators will be available to chat and answer any questions for eager students and their curious parents who may embark on a new level in their Arlington education career.

An exciting and enjoyable evening is being planned with emphasis on parent participation. Students, not tapped by teachers to be part of the demonstration classes, are required to be accompanied by an adult to attend. For any additional questions, call 781-316-3744

Thank you for Tsunami Relief!

I would like to thank the students and faculty who helped raise $1807.29 at the dance held on Friday night. A special thanks to the 640's and 760's who raised money in cluster as well. A special thank you to the Ottoson Band "The Angry Housewives" who played for us. Thank you to Domino's Pizza and Deuces-R-Wild for providing the refreshments and DJ respectively.

PEP (Physical Education Program) Federal Grant Update

On Wednesday, January 12th from 2:30 to 4pm there will be a meeting for parents interested in contributing to the Ottoson SHI (School Health Index). The SHI is designed to identify the health needs for the Ottoson Community. This grant covers a three year period during which money will support the Ottoson SHI. For more information, please contact Shari Ghitelman at 781-316-3744 ext 1653. A follow up meeting is scheduled for February 8th, 2005 at 9:30am.

After realizing that I would be sitting here all alone with the string section of the Orchestra tuning up in the Media Center, I have decided to move the date for the Parent/ Student Book Discussion group to Tuesday, December 7, 6:30 to 8 p.m. We will be discussing Witch Child by Celia Rees at that time. Copies are available at the Circulation desk here in Ottoson for those who wish to join Ms Winfield and myself.

In January we will be reading Thief Lord by Cornelia Funk and discussion takes place on January 11, 2004..

OSAC Meeting on Coat Drive

8th Grade Talent Show

Attention All 8th Graders: there will be a talent show held on Thursday afternoon 12/23. Please see Mrs. Holton in room 314 to sign up your group for the talent show. All Performers must audition (with all members present) in order to be considered for a performance in talent show. Audition date will be announced soon.

Chorus Rehearsals

Play Auditions

The choices for this year play are; Witness, Big River or the Adventures of Huckleberry Fin. The choice will be determined by auditions. Singing auditions for the play will be Wednesday (12-15) @ 2:30 in the drama rm. Callbacks will be Friday. Students needing auditions packets can get them from Ms. Kilgore. All students trying out should fill out the Audition sheet and bring it to auditions.

If you would like a picture retaken, the date is Tuesday, November 30th.

Links Program

The LINKS program connects 7th graders with Senior Citizens who may need chores done. The students are compensated for their work, and they help the community. Applications are due in the office.

Visit Our School - Aug 11

Parents/guardians and students are invited to a tour of Ottoson on Wednesday morning, August 11 at 9:30 a.m.  Ms. Bouris and Mr. Gonsalves will lead tours and answer questions.  The tours will last approximately one hour.

First Day of School - Sep 4

School starts at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 9.  Arriving sixth grade students will be directed to the Cafeteria.  Seventh grade students should go to the Blue Gym.  Eighth grade students should go to the Wooden Gym.

During the first day, students will be introduced to their teachers, participate in discussions about their classes, hear program descriptions, and tour the building. Teachers will be monitoring students moving from class to class.  Students should bring a pencil and notebook.

Students will eat lunch during one of three 20 minute lunch periods.  Students may either bring lunch from home, or purchase lunch at school.  Typical cost is between $1.75 and $2.50.  Price of milk is 35¢, and snacks are 50¢ to $1.

Seventh grade students must have the required immunizations.  They will not be admitted without having the proper medical documentation that indicates the following immunizations: 2nd measles vaccine, 3 hepatitis vaccines, chicken pox or varivax vaccine, and tetanus booster within the last 5 years.  Students not in compliance will be sent home.  Any questions should be directed to the Nurse, at 781-316-3744, ext. 2107.

If a parent or a guardians needs to come to the office, please note that all exterior doors will be locked after the students arrive in the morning. (The doors can always be opened from the inside.)  To enter the building, please go to the entrance next to the main office and ring the door bell. The receptionist will release the electronically activated lock and let you inside. Please go immediately into the office to check with the receptionist, before going anywhere else.

Sometime during the first few days, each student will receive his or her Ottoson Agenda Book.  The Agenda Book is a specially designed notebook that contains: (1) a calendar with spaces for writing down homework assignments, (2) a place for exchanging notes between parents/guardians and teachers, and (3) a list of school rules and expectations.  It is important that parents/guardians, as well as students, familiarize themselves with the Agenda Book, and use it throughout the school year.

Parents/guardians wishing to purchase school textbooks may pick up a list in the main office.  There may be changes as curriculum and materials are updated.

Cluster Placement

Every student is placed in a specific cluster.  The placement information is mailed to the parents or guardians shortly before the start of school.

If you are new to the school, you should know that each grade is divided into several clusters. Students within each cluster share the same teachers and attend most of their classes within a few adjacent rooms.  Each cluster is like a small school within a large school.

A great deal of effort goes into deciding which students end up in which cluster.  A number of factors are considered, including balance of abilities, peer relationships, special needs, and numbers of students.

Please note that cluster assignments are not subject to change except when warranted by program changes or by extenuating circumstances approved by the principal.
