Stratton School Advisory Council
The passage of the Education Reform Act of 1993 resulted in major changes
in public education in the Commonwealth. School councils are at the heart
of education reform and were among the first of the Education Reform Act
provisions to be implemented. The council exemplifies the spirit of the
law, which calls for collaboration and the involvement of all those who
have an investment in public education, especially at the school site.
The school council’s purpose is advisory, working with the principal
on school-based issues.
The
Stratton School Advisory Council comprises:
- Three school representatives (the principal and two teachers nominated
and elected by the faculty)
- Community representatives (appointed by the principal; the number
varies at the discretion of the principal)
- Three parent representatives (who volunteer for an election overseen
by the PTO)
- A School Council liaison, appointed by the Stratton School PTO and
the Stratton School Council, who reports to both the PTO and the School
Council on activities of interest.
Each elected council member serves for a period of two years. This year,
there will be one elected position available.
Council meetings are held monthly, on a week night from 5:30-7:00. The
night has varied depending on member's schedules. Occasionally the Council
needs to attend School Committee meetings as a group. This has typically
been to participate in goals setting workshops
All council meetings are open to the public, and dates and times of meetings
are posted in advance. All members of the Stratton community are encouraged
to attend meetings or to contact their representatives with comments or
concerns.

Arlington Public Schools Parent Announcement E-mail Lists
There is now an e-mail list for official Stratton announcements and notices.
These notices are limited to those from Arlington Public School administrative
staff. This is NOT a discussion list nor does it include anouncements
from the broader Stratton community (e.g. the Stratton PTO). In order
to get on this list, parents can go to:
http://www.arlington.k12.ma.us/
On the right side of the page, you will see a section titled "PARENT
NOTICES". Enter the requested information and click on "Submit".
Stratton PTO/Community Announcement and Discussion E-mail List
The Stratton Community/PTO email list (stratton_pto@yahoogroups.com) was
created Oct 14, 2001 and is intended for announcements regarding happenings
at the school as well as for general discussions among parents on school-related
topics. This list is distinct from the "Parent Notices" list
mentioned above. Messages posted to the list include reminders about PTO
meetings, and information about PTO-sponsored events and other Stratton
activities (i.e. the kind of things you see sent home with students in
the form of fliers). It also provides a forum for parents to share ideas
and post questions.
The Stratton Community/PTO email list is hosted by Yahoo, but is a "closed"
group. Non-members can't "see" the group, nor can they post
messages to the group. As such, the group is fairly private and the volume
of daily mail is very low.
If you are interested in joining this list, please contact Steve Roels.
SPOT TooK (Think of our Kids) Discussion E-mail List
This list (thinkofourkids@yahoogroups.com), created in March 2002, was
designed as a forum for sharing information and discussing ideas about
how to protect and enrich education in Arlington's public schools, grades
K through 12. It is a Yahoo group maintained by SPOT (Schools are a Priority
in Our Town), a school advocacy group in Arlington. For more information
about SPOT and the TooK list, see their web site at http://www.arlingtonspot.org/.
