Ms. Anne Hess-Mahan, 5th Grade Teacher
My name is Anne Hess-Mahan and I teach fifth grade at the Bishop School. I have taught in Arlington since 1998 when I began teaching 2nd grade with the now retired Mrs. Shushan. Previously, I had taught Kindergarten in Newton. When I received my Masters of Education from UMass Boston, it was a career change. I had been working for six years with both adults with developmental disabilities and the elderly. Over time as I trained colleagues, I realized that my childhood dream of teaching children was more suited for me!
I grew up in Vermont and moved to Boston after college. I met my husband, and once we married, I stayed in Boston! My husband and I have three children. My first daughter goes to college and both my son and younger daughter are in high school. I love to garden and spend time in the dirt caring for my flowers. I also enjoy going to Maine and taking long walks on the beach. Mrs. Wall is just a mile down the road from us and sometimes we see her!
I have taught other grades, but I love teaching the ‘big’ kids! They are so insightful and witty. Everyday is fun as we learn together and enjoy many discussions. The students have the chance to share their knowledge because they work cooperatively. Fifth grade is an important year as we prepare for middle school. To help students, we switch for at least one class. This allows them to get accustomed to other teachers and it gives them an opportunity to learn how to organize their belongings as they move from room to room. By the time they leave us we have definitely prepared them for middle school.
The best way to get in touch with me is by e-mail. My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org. I check the e-mail daily, but in case of an emergency, please call the Bishop School Office. Of course, a good old-fashioned note works just as well!
I look forward to meeting all of you and working with your child over the next school year!
