Ottoson to Present "Once Upon a Mattress"
The Ottoson Drama Club will present the beloved Broadway musical, Once Upon a Mattress, on Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9 at 7:30 pm in the Wooden Gym. The play (modified version) is a wacky re-telling of the classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, only in this version Winnifred, the swamp princess, swims the castle moat to find her prince! The play contains a valuable message about how a person’s worth should be determined not by appearances or “royal” titles but by genuine strength of character. Tickets are $10.00 and will be on sale at the door and in the Ottoson cafeteria the week of the play. Paint it Forward!!! Tech Room Makeover
Hi Parents, My name is PJ Davey and I'm with the group "Paint It Forward". As most of you have heard by now, Paint It Forward is working with the Ottoson Middle School to provide a classroom makeover for the Tech Class. Over the last few weeks, we've been very ambitious with our vision of the room and we need everyone's help to make sure all of our goals for the space are met. The space will not only have a different look, but we hope to make it a cleaner, safer and more productive environment for the students.
Our goal is to raise $1,500 by Thursday February 16th, and we've come up with a great idea on how to achieve this. Paint It Forward paints in order to have the opportunity to give back to schools throughout New England. In the same fashion, we'd like your children to put a little work in order to gain a brand new classroom. We came up with a challenge called "Chores for Change". Ms. Oropallo and I explain how it works in this video.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZAHHAVku_M
We're asking each and every parent to encourage their children to lend a hand around the house. This will not only have a great impact on their learning experience, but its a small effort that will impact many more students years after your child leaves Ottoson.
Not only do we need their help, but we need YOURS as well. With a project like this, it helps to have some skilled trades among parents. Based on the projects that we'd like to complete during February break, and these are some key players we'll need to make this happen.... Floor InstallersCarpentersElectriciansIT TechsPaintersInsulators MasonGeneral Handyman Beyond these key trades, there's many other small projects that we need to complete that are fit for any skill set and age range.
Ms. Oropallo sent out a sign up sheet for the days that we'll be at the school working, so we encourage ALL of you to spend a day with us to make this project happen. Our big reveal is set for February 26th and we cordially invite everyone to come down and check out the new Technology Classrooms.

Ottoson Select Chorus Selected to Perform at Massachusetts All State Conference
Dear Ottoson Community,
Please read the message below from Pasquale Tassone regarding the Ottoson Select Chorus' selection to perform at the All-State Conference in early March.
The Select Chorus is comprised of 30 Ottoson singers in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. I've attached a list of the young singers as I know you will want to congratulate your students-they are from all clusters!! My congratulations goes out to the whole group as well as the director, Cheryl Christo. Groups apply from all over the state of Massachusetts. This truly puts our school on the map in a very positive way.
My best, Cori Gaffny
From Pat Tassone:
Hi All:
Please join me in congratulating The AHS Honors Orchestra directed by TIno D'Agostino as well as the Ottoson Select Chorus directed by Cheryl Christo upon being selected to perform at the Massachusetts Music Educators All State-Conference in Boston on March 1 and 2, 2012.
Both groups competed anonymously and were chosen among entrants throughout the state for the 6 performance slots available to performing ensembles. We are very proud of the students and their conductors. This also marks the second time that 2 out of the 6 performances have been awarded to Arlington Public Schools groups. BRAVI!!!

Information for morning drop off
Good Afternoon,
It has been brought to my attention that parents are dropping off their children in the Acton St. Daycare. This is causing safety issues as well as congestion problems for the parents and staff of the daycare. I ask that no students be dropped off in the daycare lot.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

Japan Trip Summer 2012
Dear Ottoson Parents/Guardians, I am emailing you to let you know about an exciting opportunity for students at OMS to travel internationally this summer. This summer, students from AHS and OMS will have the opportunity to travel to our sister city of Nagaokakyo, Japan with Arlington teachers serving as chaperons. While in Japan, the students will stay with Japanese host families and travel to Japanese schools. Furthermore, the students will travel throughout the area and visit many cultural sites. This is a truly excellent opportunity to not only visit another country, but also to experience another culture. Many vacations offer the opportunity to travel to tourist destinations in another country, this is a chance for your student to experience Japan beyond just the tourist attractions and to really experience another culture. The students will leave on July 5th and return on July 15th. The price of the trip is around $2,200, which covers absolutely every part of trip (the plane ticket, food, entrance to all activities, and lodging with a Japanese host family). The only thing they need money for is souvenirs! If you are considering a summer camp, you may want to consider the chance to send your son/daughter on a trip to Asia, which is sure to be something he/she will never forget. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to call, or email.
