Announcements and Reminders
Spring has sprung and just a few more weeks of school. We are looking
forward to some warm weather.
In math we are learning about geometry. Students have been working on
angles and 3D shapes. The fourth graders have learned a lot of new vocabulary
with this unit such as faces, edges, vertex, base, acute, obtuse , right,
prism, polygon, congruent, and more! Along with our geometry unit, students
are also getting ready for math MCAS. We are working in small groups and
constantly reviewing with morning work and before math lessons.
In science, we are about to begin our unit on weather. Students will be
learning about the water cycle and how weather affects our world. Our
trip to the Blue Hills is on Monday, May 14. It will be a great introduction
to our unit. The students will get a great a view and discuss the use
of weather instruments and what weather watchers really do! We recently
enjoyed our trip to the Harvard Museum. Our students knew so much about
rocks and minerals. Our presenter was impressed!
In social studies and reading we are continuing our study of immigration.
We have some wonderful books on what it was like to come to America in
the past and what it’s like now. Classes have had some interesting
discussions on legal and illegal immigration. We have also been reading
about how someone becomes a citizen. We received a short video about the
naturalization process from Representative Markey’s office. The
timing is not right for a school field trip, but maybe you would want
to take your family to a citizenship ceremony for a summer trip. It’s
very special.
As the end of the year approaches, teachers want to remind students that
homework is still a part of their routine and must be completed and well
done. Parents, please check agendas and bookmarks.
We would like to thank Mrs. Weaver for coordinating all our field trips
this year. She did all the leg work and put everything together for us.
We really appreciate it!

Homework:
- Homework is used to reinforce and assess student learning and is vital
to help teachers evaluate progress
- Homework is written on homework board each night
- Student’s responsibility to copy down homework into agenda whether
work is already done or not
- Parent signature required each night
- Reading log is part of homework
- Homework Packet
- Given out each Friday
- Assignments due throughout the following week
- Always kept in homework folder (completed or not)
Snack:
- Daily Snack; mid-morning
- Healthy snacks help keep your student’s energy level up and
helps them to stay focused
- While we do not ban any foods in our classroom, please inform your
student if their snack contains common allergens such as peanuts or
tree nuts, so that your student knows what precautions to take
Pre-planned Vacation Policy:
- Teachers must be informed atleast a week in advace
of pre-planned absences, so that teachers can have enough time to compile
work that will be missed during your student's absence. Students will
be held responsible for completing all work missed during their absence.
Instruments:
- Students are responsible for all work they miss during
instruments time. Class and all activites (field trips and presentations)
continue as normal. It is up to you and your student to inform instrument
teachers of any possible sceduling conflicts.
Curriculum Outline
Reading:
- 90-minute uninterrupted literacy block everyday.
- Includes independant reading, leveled reading, reading with the teacher
and self-selected reading.
- In class we will incorporate Houghton Mifflin Texts, trade books,
literature circles, book projects and reading across the curriculum.
- Multiple forms of assessment will be used to track student progress,
including the DRA2.
D.E.A.R.Drop Everything And Read
- Students pick books based on reading level and interests
- In class 20 min. D.E.A.R. block each day
- Daily Reading Logs-help us to monitor students’ fluency and
reading level
- Regular one-on-one conferences
Writing:
- 6 + 1 Traits of Writing (continued)
- Focus on organization
- Increasing detail and depth of writing
- Writing across curriculum
- By the end of the year, students should be able to take
an organized, multi-paragraph essay through the writing process independantly.
Math:
- A combination of TERC Investigations, supplemental
material and direct instruction
- Four days a week will be dedicated to Investigations
- One day a week will be dedicated to the “spiral” curriculum
and arithmetic
