Essential Standards - Grade 8

NARRATIVE
Assignments: : A fictional story or a tribute/narrative poem.

Benchmark: The student will write a fictional short story or portion thereof. (Example: student writes a new ending to or the next chapter for a work read in class.)

Benchmark: The student will write a poem paying tribute to an elder whom s/he reveres, or a poem that tells a story.

DESCRIPTIVE
Assignments: A creative paragraph or page describing a setting, character, or creative process.

Benchmark: The student will write a paragraph (or page) describing a distinct setting or character.

Benchmark: The student will write a paragraph (or page) explaining creative choices he or she made when creating a visual scene or setting.

EXPOSITORY
Assignments: Biography Project Essay or Business Letter.

Benchmark: The student will write a biographical essay to include the subject's accomplishments with the focus on his or her positive contributions to society.

PERSUASIVE
Assignments: Persuasive essay

Benchmark: The student will write a persuasive essay in which s/he responds to a specific question or prompt.

RESPONSE TO LITERATURE
Assignments: Literary essay responding to one aspect of a single work.

Benchmark: The student will write a five-to-seven paragraph literary essay addressing an element of a given literary work.
