Essential Standards - Grade 9

NARRATIVE
Assignments: A 2-3 page creative piece.

Benchmark: The student will write a 3-5 section vignette modeled after The House on Mango Street or a comparable piece.

DESCRIPTIVE
Assignments: A two page creative piece.

Benchmark: The student will write a short creative piece in which he/she describes an object, a place, or a person. This piece does not have to be a complete story (in that it has a plot, setting, protagonist, etc.), but is rather a moment in time.

EXPOSITORY
Assignments: On-demand timed essay

Benchmark: The student will write an expository essay in which he/she responds to the following question: From a work of literature that the student has read in or out of school, he/she will select a character who struggles with society. In a well-developed composition, he/she will identity the character and explain why this character's conflict with society is so important.

PERSUASIVE
Assignments: On-demand timed essay

Benchmark: The student will write a persuasive essay in which he/she responds to the following question: Who is responsible for the "tragedy" of Romeo and Juliet? OR Based on Aristotle's definition of tragedy answer the following question: Is Romeo and Juliet a triumph or love or a tragedy?

RESPONSE TO LITERATURE
Assignments: On-demand timed essay; 2-3 page (typed) essay

Benchmark: The student will write a reader's response that demonstrates his/her understanding of the literature that he/she read. In doing so, the student will explore how the piece affected him/her and why, or explain the universal significance of the piece.
