Course Descriptions - Grades 6-8

GRADE 6

Course Description: Through the Great Body Shop Curriculum and other units, students continue to explore the 10 areas of health including: Injury Prevention & Personal Safety, Nutrition, Functions of the Body, Growth & Development, Illness Prevention, Substance Abuse Prevention, Community Health & Safety, Self worth, Mental and Emotional Health, Environmental & Consumer Health and Physical Fitness. In grade 6 students continue to think deeper into the risk factors that compromise their health. They explore the issues that face them as they begin the middle school experience including a process of reflecting on who they are. Students explore decisions and consequences, values, responsibilities, and relationships. They are also asked to practice consumer advocacy and acknowledge the role of community in promoting health and safety. Students are asked to apply knowledge each of these content areas to everyday situations. Additional units on child care, internet safety, and career awareness are also included in this curriculum.

  • What factors contribute to good health?
  • How can we utilize available resources to obtain, evaluate, and effectively make healthy decisions?
  • In what way can we access information and support systems for health related needs?

GRADE 7

Course Description: In this course, students will explore issues that begin to prepare them to make informed, well thought out decisions in the areas of consumerism, buying, advertising, health, relationships, and job/career options. The subject matter relates to decisions that they are beginning to face as adolescents, but the skills and knowledge they gain will correlate and prepare them to make more complicated adult decisions in their future lives. Class activities include discussions, readings, hands-on projects, videos, and presentations. National and Family Consumer Science as well as Massachusetts Health Frameworks Standards are met through the content of this course.

  • What influences the decisions that consumers make regarding the purchase of goods and services?
  • In what ways can consumers make purchasing decisions that are based on accurate and objective product information and cost?
  • How can consumers get the best value out of their purchases?
  • Why and how are good health practices essential to our general well-being?
  • How do relationships affect our social and emotional health and well-being?

GRADE 8

Course Description: In this course, students explore career choices and job skills that are necessary for them to become successful and desirable employees. They will also learn how to manage their money and set up a personal budget. To prepare them to be informed and smart consumers, they will study methods for comparison shopping and understand their rights as consumers. Students will also explore health and wellness in the family with a specific focus on family roles and relationships. Class activities include discussions, readings, hands-on projects, videos, and presentations. National and Family Consumer Science as well as Massachusetts Health Frameworks Standards are met through the content of this course.

  • How does a person choose and prepare for an occupation that suits his needs/interests?
  • How do people manage their money so they can meet their financial goals and obligations?
  • What rights do people have as consumers and how do they exercise these rights?
  • Why and how are good health practices essential to our general well-being?
  • How do relationships affect our social and emotional health and well-being?
