Teaching & Learning: Curriculum - Mathematics

Course Descriptions - Grades 9-12

ADVANCED GEOMETRY

Course Description: The Advanced Geometry course is the first in a four-year honors sequence leading to Calculus. The students demonstrate higher order thinking skills in solving non-routine problems, and in discovering and writing inductive, deductive, and coordinate proofs. This accelerated course addresses the four strands of the framework, with major emphasis on the Geometry Strand. Students study a full geometry curriculum in a formal setting. Major content areas include the study of angles, polygons, and circles; recognizing and applying properties, applying the similarity and congruence relationships, calculating related measurements, and demonstrating and applying transformations. Students will identify and apply trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will strengthen their problem solving, communicating, reasoning, and critical thinking skills.
