Gibbs School

Principal's Welcome

It is with great pride that I introduce myself as the new principal of Gibbs School. My goals as I join
the Gibbs School Team & Families is to promote and maintain an environment where all students are encouraged to perform to their highest potential. For more than seventeen years, I have dedicated my focus, passion, and purpose to the field of education. I have worked with a variety of students from pre-kindergarten age to eighth grade. Many of those students have been multilingual, bi-cultural, recipients of an educational individualized plan, English Language Learners, and/or talented and gifted. My experiences range from the urban, suburban, and rural settings. I am eager and excited to bring my skills as a self-authoring educational leader to the Gibbs School.

COVID-19 is one of the most significant health crises of the 21st Century and has in its path shined a glaring light to the lack of equity of services in our school systems, the absence of true inclusion, diversity of programs and staffing, etc. Most sadly, COVID-19 has demonstrated that many of our schools are places where our future leaders are not afforded equitable opportunities to function at their highest potential with a sense of belonging, kindness, and purpose.

My desire to join Arlington Public Schools and its stakeholders stemmed from their pre-COVID-19 mission to Ö "empower all students to achieve their maximum potential, and by preparing all students for responsible participation in an ever changing world." Arlington Public Schools,
specifically the Gibbs Faculty, Staff, and Community members are to be commended for their foresight and understanding of the value and importance of social emotional learning, diversity, and equity as indispensable and integral part of the work of guiding students through their academic years. The mission, vision, and core values of APS and Gibbs School resonate with me and my philosophy immensely.

Together, with the faculty and staff, I will work very hard to continue the work, vision, and mission that my predecessor, Principal DeFrancisco, and the Gibbs community have started. The conditions that COVID-19 has highlighted for the rest of the world, has shown us at Gibbs that we are on the right track regarding how this work should be done. I look forward to continuing to make our vision at the Gibbs School for 6th graders a positive experience as learners and as global citizens to ring true every day, in every classroom, and at every hour of the day for every student.

We get better Together. All of our strengths are needed! Letís do it Together!

Sincerely yours,

Mme Pierre-Maxwell, J.D.
