Math Support and Bypassing Math 6
Most Trailblazers will be enrolled in Math 6, a heterogeneous class that covers the Grade 6 Content Standards, as found in Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics. Formal acceleration opportunities begin in seventh grade, where students can choose between Math 7 (grade level) or Math 7A (accelerated). However, there are two invite-only opportunities for students in sixth grade:
- Math Support: A small group intervention class that meets every other day in addition to a student’s math class. The purpose of this class is to improve foundational skills and concepts, support the curriculum, and help prepare students for assessments. The identification of the students for this class relies on both classroom teacher, interventionist, and special education teacher recommendations as well as MCAS scores.
- Bypassing Math 6: An optional, formal process designed for incoming sixth-grade students who are interested in and feel prepared to bypass Math 6 and take the accelerated seventh-grade math class, Math 7A, in sixth grade. Mastery and reasoning of Math 6 content will be measured through an hour-long paper-and-pencil assessment. The Bypass assessment will take place in April at each of the seven elementary schools. If you would like your child to participate in this assessment, please complete the Bypassing Math 6 Interest Form by Friday, March 28, 2025.
For the Bypassing Math 6 option, information will be available in early spring 2024.
