ML Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment
Language for Learning: Supporting multilingual learners’ academic success through language-focused instruction.
The ML program model in the Arlington Public Schools is Sheltered English Immersion (SEI). ML students learn academic content while simultaneously learning English. Sheltered instruction is intended to make instruction in academic content areas more accessible to ML students. The language of instruction is in English. The ML student also receives direct English language instruction with a qualified ML teacher that designs targeted lessons that incorporate reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Our ML program is based on current research and provides instructional programming aligned with the WIDA standards.
Federal and state laws require ML students be assessed annually to measure the students proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as the progress students are making in learning English. Our ML students participate in ACCESS for ELLs state-wide assessments in January – February.
