ML Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment

Language for Learning: Supporting multilingual learners’ academic success through language-focused instruction.

The MLL program model in the Arlington Public Schools is Sheltered English Immersion (SEI). MLL students learn academic content while simultaneously learning English.  Sheltered instruction is intended to make instruction in academic content areas more accessible to MLL students.  The language of instruction is in English.  The MLL student also receives direct English language instruction with a qualified MLL teacher that designs targeted lessons that incorporate reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Our MLL program is based on current research and provides instructional programming aligned with the WIDA standards.

Federal and state laws require MLL students be assessed annually to measure the students proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as the progress students are making in learning English.  Our MLL students participate in ACCESS for ELLs state-wide assessments in January – February.
